“For us they will – uk” is an original charcoal drawing on paper by English painter and street artist Guy Denning.

The human being (with a capital H) is the subject of most of the artist’s work. Indeed, Guy Denning paints or draws characters, most often anonymous. He is interested in the beauty of their gestures, their struggles, but also in their interiority, often dark. The common thread in his paintings, murals and drawings is the strength and expressiveness of the characters. In his paintings or murals, the artist looks at their flaws, their differences. He sometimes confronts us with their sufferings, with the injustices that afflict them. Because Guy Denning is also a committed artist. It is this truth that makes them so close and so familiar to us.

We like the oblique composition in this good size drawing. The body of the dancer occupies the entire horizontal space of the painting and produces an impression of movement and grace. Observe also how the gaze of the character seems entirely turned towards her inner and mysterious universe. The title of the painting, “For us they will – uk” also contributes to the mystery. Indeed it is also the title of a rather dark poetic text set to music in 1987 by Coll. The poem ends with these words: “You have to burn, you have to burn in order to shine”. Wouldn’t the drawing, its title and its possible reference to this poem, be a representation of the artist himself, his will to denounce and to take a stand?
