“Dove constellation – uk” is a spray paint on canvas by street artist James Cochran aka Jimmy C.

This painting on natural linen canvas is a study for a project that began in Lisbon in 2016. Initiated by an urban art gallery, GAU, “Rostos de Muro Azul” (The Faces of the Blue Wall) stretches for more than a kilometre, it is one of the largest street art walls in the world and is growing year after year.

The project was launched in 2012, on the occasion of the World Mental Health Day, on the wall of the psychiatric hospital Julio de Matos, with the harmonic constraint of painting a face on a blue background.

With his always positive and luminous look, James Cochran stands out in this accumulation of faces which often stick to the heaviness of this place of confinement, by proposing a luminous, poetic and hopeful scene.

THE ARTISTIC DIMENSION

“Dove constellation – uk” is also a small constellation of satellites. It is pleasant to see how the artist takes a raw reality (the nice name given to their satellites by NASA engineers) and builds poetry around it. In a night sky, a young girl receives on her hand a dove made of stars.

We can also observe the work of juxtaposition of colours which reminds us of Seurat or Pissarro. The juxtaposed touches of colour create new colours in the eye of the spectator. Above all, as with the impressionists, the form is not rendered by the drawing but by the touches of colour.

Finally, the work of the dark and light tones perfectly reproduces the image of a starry sky. It is important to note the important differences between the work of the study on canvas and the finished result on the wall. The painting proposes a monochrome work, which explores the theme of the starry sky. The mural is more exuberant and is a joyful explosion of colour.
